Garibaldi Giuseppe Course

Garibaldi Giuseppe Course (Corso Garibaldi) branches off from piazza XXV Aprile (Como Course, Milan) to the north to get to via Pontaccio (Brera).

In 1826 the Austrian government entrusted the neoclassical architect Giacomo Moraglia with the construction of the new Porta Comasina, again in the current Piazza XXV Aprile: a majestic late-neoclassical arch, dedicated first to Francis I of Austria and later to Giuseppe Garibaldi.

In 1891, in the course of some excavations, the remains of the 'rustic' bridge (from which the current name of Via Pontaccio derives its name), demolished in the 16th century, were found.

The street was one of the main targets of the Austrian ferocity during the riots in March 1848. In the years of the unification of Italy, precisely in 1860, it was decided to dedicate both the Porta (which became Porta Garibaldi) and the road ( Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi, in fact).

The choice of the dedication to Garibaldi was motivated both by the popular patriotism typical of this area and because the road was in the direction of Como, where Garibaldi had won important battles. It is also said that Garibaldi himself entered Milan from this street.
