Located along the main path that leads from Rialto to Piazzale Roma, located behind the Basilica dei Frari, Campo San Rocco is a jewel of Venetian architecture.
The name of the field is given by the church and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco that rise there, giving, with their white piers, the dominant aspect of the field.
On the opposite side from the Scuola Grande there are the mighty Gothic apses in bare brick of the Basilica dei Frari, the sound of whose organs often fills the air of the field, and on the left beside the small building of the old Scoletta di San Rocco, the original seat of the great brotherhood.
The church preserves the relics of San Rocco and annually, on the occasion of the feast of the saint, on August 16, a wooden canopied structure is erected in the field to join the entrance portals of the church and school with the main access to the field.
The tendòn (marquee) is the result of an ancient vote of the Senate and the Signoria for the liberation of the city from the plague, following which the Serenissimo Principe visited the church and brotherhood every year on the occasion of the feast.
The perimeter of the canopy and the grafting stones of the support poles, in white Istrian stone, are clearly visible on the pavement of the field.
