The Museum of Modern Art (also known by the acronym MoMA) is located in Midtown Manhattan, New York, on 53rd street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.
It had an extraordinary importance for the development of modern art and was often considered the main modern museum in the world.
The museum's collection offers an incomparable overview of modern and contemporary world art, since it houses architectural projects and design objects, drawings, paintings, sculptures, photographs, screen prints, illustrations, films and multimedia works.
The library and archives of MoMA collect over 300,000 books and periodicals, in addition to the personal files of more than 70,000 artists.
The original idea of a museum of modern art was developed in 1928 mainly by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller (wife of John D. Rockefeller Jr.) and two of her friends, Lillie P. Bliss and Mary Quinn Sullivan.
Their group became known under various nicknames, including "the Ladies" (It. Le Signore), "the daring ladies" (It. Le ardite Signore), and "the adamantine ladies" (It. Le Signore adamantine).
As the site of the museum they designed, they rented a rather modest building and opened it to the public on November 7, 1929, 9 days after the collapse of Wall Street.
