MMM Juval, Messner Mountain Museum

The MMMM Juval Museum was set up by Reinhold Messner himself inside Juval Castle, a medieval fortress that rose atop a hill in the Vinschgau Valley.

This building was purchased in 1983 by the mountaineer and then restored over the course of several years: he later displayed some works from his private collection in his residence until it became part of the MMM museum complex.

This venue is dedicated to the myth of mountains, as for many peoples mountains take on mythological and sacred significance, for example, Mount Olympus for the ancient Greeks, Ararat on which Noah's Ark landed, Mount Sinai in Egypt, the Tibetan Kailash, Mount Fuji in Japan, a sacred place for Shintoists, and finally Ayers Rock, a rocky massif sacred to Australian Aborigines: the museum chronicles these sacred mountains with displays of paintings, precious relics and masks.
