The Messner Mountain Museum (MMM) is a project of a museum circuit conceived and built by the South Tyrolean mountaineer Reinhold Messner, divided into six different locations scattered throughout the Alps.
The MMM Corones museum stands on the top of Plan de Corones, at 2,275 meters, not far from the Bell of Peace inaugurated in 2002, and tells the discipline and history of mountaineering and climbing in the sixth and last location of the Messner Mountain Museum. large walls.
The museum was inaugurated on 23 July 2015 and can be reached with the Riscone cable car.
The museum, designed by the Anglo-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, covers an area of ??about 1000 square meters, includes an entrance area, a small library, three levels of exhibition spaces for permanent and temporary exhibitions and a small auditorium.
There have been numerous protests for the tremendous environmental impact of the construction made with thousands of tons of reinforced concrete and invasive excavations that have devastated the natural conformation of the summit.
Until recently Plan de Corones, the most popular ski area in the province, was of little attraction for tourists in the summer months.
In order to revive the plateau even in the hot season and to use the ski lifts in a sustainable way, the idea of a viewing platform was born.
In addition to offering a unique panorama, the mountain is located at the intersection of the three South Tyrolean cultures: the German, the Ladin and the Italian.
Upon learning of it, Reinhold Messner thought of a cultural qualification, proposing the creation of a place of peace, of deceleration, of retreat, of an experiential space antithetical to today's "fanaticism for sport": a museum on traditional mountaineering as crowning (Corones in Ladin means "the crown") of its museum structure. Skirama Plan de Corones not only agreed immediately but, as a client, also managed to secure the collaboration of Zaha Hadid's architecture studio.
The famous mountain for skiing and hiking, the summit of hang gliders and paragliders, has thus also become the mountain of the museum.
