The Glass Museum, founded in Murano in 1861, is part of the Venice Civic Museums Foundation.
Its headquarters is in the historic Palace of the Bishops of Torcello, a flowery Gothic style building formerly the home of bishop Marco Giustinian.
The museum was founded in 1861 in Murano by the abbot Vincenzo Zanetti.
It was born as a project for the establishment of an archive to bring together the testimonies of the history of the island, but rapidly evolved into its museum form. In 1862 it was also connected to a school that allowed glassmakers to study the designs and models of the glass contained in the museum. In 1923, with the annexation of Murano to the Municipality of Venice, the Glass Museum was included in the Venetian Civic Museums.
His collections were subject to a rearrangement in 1932, with the addition of glasses from the Correr, Cicogna and Molin collections. Subsequently, the deposits of the Archaeological Superintendency made it possible to establish the archaeological section, of which the most prestigious elements are the glass from Zadar.
Today the museum's collections, as well as through purchases, are increased by donations from the island's furnaces, which especially enrich the contemporary collection. The museum has recently been restored to house the collections of the twentieth century.
