The British Museum is one of the largest and most important museums in the history of the world.

It was founded in 1753 by Sir Hans Sloane, a physician and scientist who collected a literary and artistic heritage in its original core: the Montague House library in London, later purchased by the British state for twenty thousand pounds and open to the public on 15 January 1759.

The current president is Sir John Boyd.
