The seven hills of Rome are the Campidoglio and the Aventino (proposed tour Aventino - Testaccio), the Palatine, the Celio, the Opium as part of the Esquiline, the Viminali and the Quirinale.
Between Celio and Oppio, the Via Labicana leads east from the Colosseum. The name of the Oppio hill is attributed to a warrior named Oppius, who defended Rome in the 6th century BC.
The Celio was already included by Romulus in the city. In addition to the numerous basilicas, there are various excavations on the Celio, some of which can be visited. The Celio hill is 51 meters high.
For the climb it is possible to take the Via Claudia from the Colosseum, from the Circo Massimo take the Salita di San Gregorio, which starts behind the tram tracks.
Particularly suggestive is the climb on the Salita di San Gregorio. The climb passes in front of a convent founded by Pope Gregory I in the 6th century. You then come to an ancient stretch of road called Clivo di Scauro, which passes next to the Basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo.
Opposite the Basilica of San Clemente stands Colle Oppio on the other side of Via Labicana. The hill extends up to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and Termini Station.
In the Opium park there is a square with a fountain dedicated to the reformer Martin Luther. Buried under the park is Nero's Domus Aurea building.
The area between the park and Via Cavour belongs to the Monti district and is characterized by picturesque winding alleys.
The Esquiline is the highest (58.3 meters on Viale di Monte Oppio) and largest of the seven hills on which Rome was founded. The Colle is made up of three hills: the Opius in the southern sector, the Fagutal in the western one, bordering the Velia, and the Cispius in the northern part, where the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is currently located
