The Fort was built around 973, the year of the first notarial document.
Historic defensive fortress built by the Genoese on a pre-existing medieval castle.
It became a military fortress in 1600, consisting of a good defensive level.
Since 1946 it has been handed over to the Ministry of Cultural Heritage which takes care of its maintenance and promotion through the Superintendence for Architectural and Landscape Heritage of Piedmont.
Since 2007 the Amici del Forte di Gavi Association has collaborated in the promotion and enhancement with the aforementioned Superintendency.
Various cultural events are held.
