Imola

Imola is the largest municipality in the metropolitan city by extension and the second largest by population after Bologna. It is the administrative headquarters of the new Imolese district. Imola is located along the via Emilia, at the point where the Apennine valley of the Santerno river flows into the Po valley. The municipal territory is mostly flat, except for a hilly belt in the southern part.

The city was formerly called Forum Cornelii, after the Roman dictator Lucio Cornelio Silla founded it around 82 BC. The city became a center of agriculture and commerce. According to Paolo Diacono, in 412 Imola was the scene of the marriage of Ataulfo, king of the Visigoths, with Galla Placidia, daughter of the emperor Theodosius the Great.

The current name derives from the phrase "Castrum Imolae", used for the first time in the seventh century to indicate the settlement on Mount Castellaccio; subsequently the name passed to the city itself. In the Gothic War (535-553) and after the invasion of the Lombards, the city was alternately governed by the Byzantines and the Lombards. With the Exarchate of Ravenna, Imola passed under papal authority. In the 9th century it was bravely defended against the Saracens and Hungarians by Fausto Alidosi. In the tenth century the family of Troilo Nordiglio acquired great power.
