Melfi is an Italian town in the province of Potenza in Basilicata. Made up of a historic center with a medieval appearance, the city has become an important industrial center and is home to a large number of businesses.
The industrial center of San Nicola di Melfi, built in the early nineties, houses the SATA car factory, the most advanced plant of the FCA group in Italy, based on innovative automation systems for the production phases and on the organization of work that maximizes the productivity. Melfi is located in the far north of Basilicata, at the base of Monte Vulture, an inactive volcano from the protohistoric era, on the border with Puglia (province of Foggia) and Campania (province of Avellino), a border marked by the Ofanto river. The municipal area, purely hilly, with an average altitude of 645 meters above sea level, extends over an area of ​​206.25 km², the second largest municipality in the province.
From the inland area, which is not affected by the temperate action of the sea, and with altitudes above 500 meters, Melfi finds itself in a cold temperate climate, with irregular rains and mostly present in the autumn and winter seasons. Winters are severe with frequent snowfall. Summers are quite hot with a dry climate. According to the average data of the three-year period 1961-1990, the average temperature of the coldest month, January, stands at +5.6 ° C, while that of the hottest month, August, is +23.6 ° C.
