The Rocca di Acquaviva Picena is the majestic fourteenth-century fortress that dominates the Italian town of the same name in the province of Ascoli Piceno (Papal State).
The fortress has been declared a national monument since 1902.
The fortress was built by the Acquaviva family around 1300, but few traces remain of the original structure.
In 1447 the primitive fortress suffered substantial damage from the Fermani, who held fundamental strategic interests in Acquaviva. It was rebuilt in 1474 by Giovan Francesco Azzolino, and the works were directed by the Florentine architect Baccio Pontelli.
A further general restoration is due to Giuseppe Sacconi and was completed at the end of the 19th century.
A mighty fortress on a hill between the sea and the Apennines, relives its prestigious history with the help of 3D computer graphics and the Oculus Go viewer.
The fortress, from a small early medieval outpost, became a solid castle with the Acquaviva family, vassals of the Swabian family and protagonists of the exploits of Frederick II, around the early thirteenth century. Its strategic position makes it the protagonist of numerous sieges extensively reconstructed in the 3D movie The Fortress in Time where we witness the transformation of the Fortress following the introduction of firearms. At the end of the fifteenth century from a typical medieval manor it becomes a fortress thanks to Baccio Pontelli who transforms it by strengthening the very high walls with large overhangs that protect it from the blows of the newborn artillery.
The new museum building of the Fortress of Acquaviva Picena focused attention on the history and architectural evolution of a symbolic monument of the Marches, catalyzing the preferences of tourists and locals.
The reconstruction work was possible thanks to careful historical research, study of the excavations, of theories that do not always agree, comparison of documents and laser scanning of the entire monument which has brought to light the innermost structural secrets.
The project started with the restoration of the Fortress continued with the installation of new and captivating didactic panels, a tactile path for the visually impaired that relies on two models of the Fortress (one from the fourteenth century and the other as it is today and the realization of the video La Fortress in Time with Oculus Go viewer, beloved by the youngest, but also highly appreciated by those who are a few years older.
