Bergamo City

Bergamo is an Italian town, the capital of the homonymous province in Lombardy and the fourth most populous center in the region after Milan, Brescia and Monza. The inhabited area of Bergamo is divided into two distinct parts, the "Lower City" and the "Upper City"; the latter is located at a higher altitude and houses the majority of the most significant monuments, while the Lower City - although it is also of ancient origin and retains its historical nuclei - has been made partly more modern by some urbanization interventions . The two portions of the town are separated by the Venetian walls, which have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2017.

Bergamo is nicknamed "the city of the Thousand" because of the large number of Bergamo volunteers, about 180, who took part in the expedition of the Thousand led by Giuseppe Garibaldi, a crucial episode of the Risorgimento.

Bergamo is located in the foothills, where the high plain leaves room for the last hills of the Bergamasque pre-Alps, halfway between the Brembo and Serio rivers. The ancient core of the city was founded precisely on the hills. The seismic classification of the city is zone 3 (low seismicity).
