Maggiani Palace

Maggiani Palace is located in La Spezia and is located in full evidence at the intersection of Corso Cavour and Viale Aldo Ferrari. It is undoubtedly one of the most characteristic art nouveau buildings in the city.

Built between 1900 and 1902, the building is enriched by a "capricious and bizarre diversified decoration on each floor", as Valeria Scandellari writes in its volume The character of Liberty in the architecture of La Spezia in the twentieth century. From the internal courtyard covered by a skylight, you can go up to the floors by means of three stairs and an elevator, originally hydraulic, which was installed in 1906 in La Spezia.

It was the first hydraulic lift in the city and was replaced in the 1990s. In the entrance hall there is still the caretaker's guardhouse in fine carved wood, with its apartment, now rented to an external company. Among the decorations stands an angel, to which the gaze comes following the floral offerings of numerous female figures. There is no shortage of liberty symbols such as peacock and sunflower.
