Tower of the Mint

The Tower of the Mint (Torre della Zecca) closed the walls of Florence towards the Arno to the east, and was, in fact, one of the "terminal towers" of the city wall perimeter.

Before the construction, in the immediate vicinity, of the mint mills, the structure was referred to as the notomy tower, or observation tower.

At the beginning of the sixteenth century, the building was also known as the tower of San Francesco, given the proximity of the convent and hospital of the same name.

Today the tower is isolated in the middle of a road junction of the Circonvallazione streets in Piazza Piave, near the Lungarno della Zecca Vecchia.
