Sperlinga Castle is a medieval castle built on the rock overlooking the town of Sperlinga in the province of Enna, carved out of sandstone rock from a single monolith above sacred temple caves dating back 4,000 years.
It features a special construction in sandstone rock.
The rock foundation of the castle (from the Greek "Spelaìon" later Latinized to "Spelunca" or cave) was structured by the indigenous Sicilian peoples, in which caves dug into the rock, were used as burial grounds.
perlinga became home to a large community of Lombards arriving in Sicily from northern Italy in the 12th century, Lombard, still in fact the local language is a particular dialect called "Gallo-Italic."
