The village Toppo

The village Toppo, in the municipality of Travesio, preserves the remains of the medieval castle that dominated the plain and the village below. The complex is a beautiful example of fortified architecture in Friuli. In 1220 eight "masi" (family-run rural houses) made up the village of Toppo. In the sixteenth century there are twenty-five documented farms.

From Palazzo Toppo Wasserman, originally a farm that later developed into a stately country house in the sixteenth century, the journey begins to discover the original buildings of the village, very well-preserved stone farms. In the square in front of the Palace, on the other hand, a seventeenth-century building with an entrance arch, the summer residence of the Counts of Spilimbergo, is visible.

A beautiful cycle path connects the village of Toppo to the capital Travesio which houses one of the most significant examples of Friulian Renaissance painting. In fact, the ancient Pieve di San Pietro houses two works by the Lombard stonecutter Giovanni Antonio Pilacorte: the internal portal of the sacristy, dated 1484, the first known work of Pilacorte in Friuli and a baptismal font. But above all on the walls and in the vault of the choir the splendid frescoes by Giovanni Antonio de Sacchis, known as Pordenone.
