The Jewish Museum of Rome is located in the Synagogue which is a place of encounter, culture, dialogue and love for beauty and is located in the former Jewish ghetto.
Housed in the monumental complex of the Tempio Maggiore, since 1960 it has housed a magnificent collection that dates back above all to the centuries of the Roman ghetto (1555-1870).
With almost 100,000 visitors a year, the itinerary of the Jewish Museum of Rome is spread over 7 rooms, including one completely dedicated to the story of the 4,000 Jews who fled from Tripoli and arrived in Rome in 1967.
The permanent exhibition also includes a video with the reconstruction of the Synagogue of Ostia Antica and an interactive table on the Ghetto of Rome: in a sort of passage between the historical reproductions and the reconstructed three-dimensional model, it is possible to stroll through the alleys and streets of one of the most unique and full of history places in the city of Rome.
The entrance ticket to the Museum includes a guided tour of the Synagogue.
The Temple was inaugurated in 1904 on the demolished and reclaimed area of ??the old ghetto following the master plan of 1888. The monumental building is surmounted by a square-based dome covered in aluminum. The interior, with an arrangement of the bimah (pulpit) that does not exactly conform to the tradition of the "Roman rite", is richly decorated in the art nouveau style.
The Spanish Temple has also been housed in the same complex since 1932 which, in 1948, was embellished with the marble furnishings of the Cinque Scole, that is, the Five ancient synagogues of the ghetto, recreating the atmosphere you breathed there with its splendid marble and fabrics.
