Church of ancient foundation, the facade was built between the end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth century by Giacomo della Porta and Carlo Rainaldi.
The church of Santa Maria in Via is a place of worship.
Called the Lourdes of Rome, because inside there is the Madonna del Pozzo, to which every day countless faithful go.
Legend has it that in 1526, instead of the church, there was a well to draw water attached to the stable of a cardinal's palace. It is said that a servant of the cardinal dropped an image of the Madonna into the well. The incredible happened: from the well the water overflowed, which in a short time flooded the stable. The grooms, hurrying to save the animals, noticed that a stone floated on the water. In reality it was the image of the Madonna, which had been thrown into the well.
When the servants tried to recover the image, the tile slipped from their hands. The cardinal, after a short prayer, managed to recover the painting; the waters of the well, therefore, spontaneously began to retreat. The next day the cardinal went to the Pope to tell him what had happened.
The event was recognized as supernatural, and it was decided to build the current church around the miraculous well, and to venerate the re-emerging image inside.
