The Aragonese castle (or Castel Sant'Angelo), with its quadrangular plan and the vast central courtyard, occupies the far corner of the island on which the ancient village of Taranto stands.
The first nucleus of the castle dates back to 780, when the Byzantines began the construction of the "Rocca" to protect against the attacks of the Saracens and the Republic of Venice. This first fortification consisted of tall and narrow towers, from which they fought with spears, arrows, stones, and boiling oil.
