The National Archaeological Museum of Athens is one of the most important museums in the world. In addition to being the largest museum in Greece, it is also the richest in the world related to Hellenic art, with exhibitions covering all the history and artistic production of ancient Greece from the Cycladic period, to the Mycenaean, to the classical one. It also preserves Egyptian and Roman collections.
The museum was founded in 1834, when a central archaeological museum was established in the Theséion with a royal decree. But soon this site turned out to be insufficient, and therefore in 1866, thanks to the contributions of private citizens, a large building was built, whose construction was completed in 1880.
