Tbilisi is the capital of Georgia, whose historic center with cobbled streets reflects the long and complicated history of the country, which first suffered Persian and then Russian domination.
The city is characterized by various architectural styles, ranging from Eastern Orthodox churches to liberty-style palaces, to modernist structures from the Soviet era.
In a dominant position above the city are Narikala, a 4th century fortress, and the Kartlis Deda, the iconic statue of the "Mother of Georgia".
