Castel Prenestino rises on the extreme western layers of the Prenestini mountains, in a dominant position with respect to Palestrina at 765 m asl The most important reliefs in the municipal area are those of Colle Perrazzo, 973 m asl, La Montagnozza, 894 m asl, and Colle Cervino, 874 m asl.

According to tradition, the apostle Peter preached these findings, but its origins are to be found in the Middle Ages, when inhabitants of Palestrina moved to these heights to find a more easily defensible place. Castel San Pietro witnessed some phases of what passed into history as the Battle of Palestrina, fought in 1848 by soldiers of the Roman Republic led by Giuseppe Garibaldi, and those of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.
