Montalbano Hamlet

Montalbano Elicona (Sicilian Muntarbanu) is an Italian town in the metropolitan city of Messina in Sicily.

The town is part of the circuit of the most beautiful villages in Italy and has been proclaimed "Borgo dei Borghi" 2015. It is characterized by the presence, in the ancient part of the town, of an ancient castle that was the summer residence of King Frederick II of Aragon.

The earliest evidence of the existence of the village dates back to the 11th century, when it was the property of the state. In 1232 it revolted against Frederick II of Swabia, siding with the Pope along with other centers. Later it belonged to several feudal lords: to Matteo Palizzi in 1350, to Vinciguerra d'Aragona in 1359, to the De Sidot in 1396, to the Romano Colonna, to the Bonannos in 1587.

info: Montalbano Elicona was included on April 5, 2015 in the list of the 90 most beautiful medieval villages in Italy, namely in the club of the most beautiful villages in Italy, an exclusive association of small Italian centers that stand out for their great interest artistic, cultural and historical, for the harmony of the urban fabric, liveability and services for citizens.
