Kilkenny Castle

Kilkenny Castle (Kilkenny Castle in English) is an imposing and elegant medieval manor built at the end of the 12th century and is located in the homonymous Irish town of Kilkenny.

Residence in the early days of the FitzWalter family and then Butler, it was the seat of the Confederate Ireland assembly in 1640. The first historical structure built in the castle area was a wooden tower built in 1172 by Richard de Clare, the Anglo-Norman conqueror better known as Strongbow.

The area along the Nore River was strategically important and twenty years later Trongbow's son-in-law, William Marshall, had a stone castle built with four towers, three of which are still intact. It was purchased in 1391 by the Butler family; noble and powerful local family, and remained their property until 1935 when, due to the too expensive maintenance costs, they were forced to auction off all the furniture and then in 1967 to sell the whole castle for only 50 pounds to the city .
