Nverness Castle (Scottish Gaelic: Caisteal Inbhir Nis; Italian: Inverness Castle) is located on a hill above the city of Inverness, overlooking the Ness River in Scotland. Today's red sandstone structure was built in 1836 by Scottish architect William Burn.
It is located in the area previously occupied by a defensive fortification of the 11th century and occupied by the District Court (Sheriff Court). The place has been a site of castles for many centuries. The building is not open to the public, but the external gardens can be visited. An illustration of the castle was presented on the back of the 50 pound note issued by the Royal Bank of Scotland in 2005.
