Currently the tower continues to be a tourist attraction of great importance for the City of Toronto. Despite this, its main function remains that of a huge telecommunications transmitter. In 2002 the tower underwent a series of maintenance and modernization works, which saw the creation, at the base of the tower, of a series of shops, restaurants, cinemas and small amusement arcades for tourists. The tower also covers the lightning rod function.
