Hand of the Desert


The desert hand is a sculpture located 75 km south of the city of Antofagasta, near the Pan American Highway 5. It was designed by the Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrázabal, at 1100 m asl The sculpture was built on a reinforced concrete base, has a height of 11 m.

It was inaugurated on March 28, 1992 and its construction was financed thanks to contributions from the Pro Antofagasta Corporation. Its maintenance is performed by the same company, which carries out cleaning operations, since the sculpture is a constant white graffiti.

According to its author, every visitor to the Desert Hand can give its own interpretation of the meaning of this sculpture. Some say it is the city that says goodbye to the traveler. According to others, it represents the victims of injustice and torture during the 1973-1990 military dictatorship.
