Darvaza, The Door to Hell

The Door to Hell or also called Darvaza is a gas crater located in the Karakum desert, in Turkmenistan, about 260 km north of Ashgabat.

Locals and travelers call it "The door to the underworld" or "The gates of hell". It is located 90 km from the village of Erbent.

It is an abyss of artificial origin caused by an accident in 1971, when a drilling carried out with the aim of looking for oil caused the ground to collapse and opened an escape route to natural gas, which was voluntarily set on fire to avoid worse environmental consequences.

Since then the crater has been burning continuously, so much so that the locals gave it the name of "gate of hell".

The crater is a popular tourist attraction. Since 2009, 50,000 tourists have visited the site. The gas crater has a total area of 5,350 m².

The surrounding area is also famous for wilderness camping.
