EYE Film Instituut Nederland

The EYE Film Institute Netherlands is a cultural institution of Amsterdam dedicated to cinematography. Its headquarters is located in front of the Central Station, on the north bank of the I, in the Overhoeks district (North Amsterdam).

The building was designed by Austrian architects Romani Delugan and Elke Delugan-Meissl and was inaugurated in April 2012.

The EYE has four cinemas and an exhibition space of 1,200 m². Inside there are also educational activities, workshops dedicated to the cinema, and there is a shop and a bar-restaurant with a terrace.

Near the institute there is a collection center created for activities in the field of restoration, conservation and research. In the same place there is also the central warehouse and the library.

EYE participates in the Cineville partnership.

The EYE was born in 2010 from the merger between Filmmuseum, Netherlands Film, Film Bank and the Nederlands Instituut voor Filmeducatie (Dutch Institute for Film Education). The goal is the preservation of the cinematographic heritage for the future future, both of Dutch films and of foreign films shown in the Netherlands.

The collection itself and the knowledge that the employees have in the field of restoration are internationally renowned. Furthermore, the Institute wants to promote a lively film culture in the Netherlands.

The EYE hosts the largest film library in the Netherlands. The Institute's collection is funded by 46,000 films, 500,000 photos, 41,500 posters and screenplays, directorial archives and thousands of cinema-related objects.

The collection includes films throughout the history of cinema, from silent films from the late nineteenth century to contemporary productions. The collection, to which many Dutch but also foreign titles are regularly added, is the inspiration and source for the film programs and exhibitions of the institute. There are regular programs dealing with the major themes of film history and today's film developments.

The institute also organizes many outdoor shows, festivals, theater shows for families and retrospectives. It operates as a distributor of classic and contemporary films. The Desmet Collection was included in 2011 in the UNESCO list of the Memory of the World (also known as World Heritage for documents).
