The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, often referred to simply as the Rijksmuseum, is a museum founded in 1800 in The Hague, to exhibit the collections of Dutch state holders, following the French example. It was then known as the National Art Gallery (Dutch: Nationale Kunst-Gallerij).
In 1808 the museum was moved to Amsterdam by order of Louis Napoleon, nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte. City-owned paintings, such as Rembrandt's Night Watch, became part of the collection.
