Founded in 1989 by Sir Terence Conran, the museum was built by Conran & Partners (later Conran Roche) in a former banana warehouse, located on the south bank of the Thames.

Since 2003, the museum has awarded the Designer of the Year award to selected projects. The award is divided into six categories: architecture, products, graphics, digital, fashion and transport.
