The Vatican City, officially the State of the Vatican City (in Latin: Status Civitatis Vaticanæ), commonly called simply Vatican, or par excellence Saint Peter, or imprecisely the Holy See, is a landlocked state of Western Europe.
The Vatican City State was born on 11 February 1929 following the signing of the Lateran Pacts between Benito Mussolini and Pietro Gasparri, respectively the representatives of the Kingdom of Italy and of the Holy See.
The Vatican City is an enclave in the territory of the Italian Republic inserted in the urban fabric of the city of Rome. The state has a regime of theocratic, hierocratic, elective absolute monarchy of patrimonial type, headed by the pope of the Catholic Church.
The official language is Italian, while Latin is the official language of the Holy See.
The Vatican City State has its own currency, but, as a result of the customs and monetary union with Italy, it adopts the euro, which in the eight denominations of the coins bear the effigy of the reigning pope in the national face, or subjects Vatican, and issues its own stamps, usable for the postal service to the whole world (but obviously only with shipping from the Vatican Post Office).
Important commemorative series of coins and stamps much sought after by numismatists and philatelists from around the world.
In the Vatican there is also a daily newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, founded in 1861, and since 1931 there has been a radio station, Vatican Radio, which broadcasts worldwide in various languages.
