Rocca PalaceRocca Palace is a museum center of Chiavari, located in via Costaguta. The building is located in the immediate vicinity of the historic "Piazza delle Carrozze" in the historic center, named after Giacomo Matteotti, surrounded entirely by the prestigious Rocca public park.
In the ancient stables there is the local archaeological museum and, on the floors, the civic gallery.
The collection includes important paintings from the Genoese, Italian, Spanish and Flemish schools; in a picture gallery dedicated to Pietro Torriglia, local marquis, works from the 16th and 18th centuries are preserved.
In addition, numerous ceramic and porcelain objects are preserved as well as a series of prints of the time. The painting Natura morta by Jan Roos belongs to the "Torriglia collection", while Gioacchino Assereto's The three parks are from the civic gallery.
The palace was built between 1629 and 1635 at the behest of the local Marquis Costaguta who commissioned the project to the architect Bartolomeo Bianco. In 1760 the property passed to the Ranieri, then to the Grimaldi family who enlarged the volumes and to the Pallavicini.
Acquired by Giuseppe Rocca, from whom the building takes its definitive name, in 1912, he will donate the entire property, consisting of the building and the modest park, to the Chiavari municipality. Rocca himself, before the sale, commissioned the transformation of the garden into a park, entrusting the task, in 1908, to the Genoese Polinice Caccia as well as a general recovery and restoration of the entire complex.
In the 2000s the entire area of ??the park was the subject of a new planting of the flora and a recovery of the architectural elements.
