Island of Corsica

Corsica (Corse in French, Corsica in Corsican, Còrsega in Liguria) is an island belonging politically to France, but geographically to the Italian geographical region.

By extension the fourth Mediterranean island (after Sicily, Sardinia and Cyprus), separated from Sardinia by the short section of the Bocche di Bonifacio, emerges as a great mountain range rich in forests from the Mediterranean sea, marking the border between its western part, the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Ligurian Sea.

Crossroads for 4,000 years of routes and peoples, the island, according to a by now consolidated legend, was called Kallíste (Καλλίστη, that is the most beautiful) by the Greeks; other ancient names were Cyrnos (in Greek Κύρνος), Cernealis (Κηρνεάλις), Corsis (Κορσίς) and Cirné (ιρνή).

Today it is called "l'Île de Beauté", meaning "the island of beauty". It is known as the birthplace of Napoleon (born in 1769 in Ajaccio, three months after the invasion of the Corsican Republic by Pasquale Paoli and a year after the island was given as a pledge for debts to Luigi XV from the Republic of Genoa).

With about a third of its protected area as a natural park, and much of the non-populated coast, Corsica, almost depopulated (about 35 inhabitants / km²), bases most of its economy on tourism, which roughly doubles its summer population.

To the receptivity, well developed and assorted for offers and destinations (from mountaineering to scuba diving), there is the traditional agro-pastoral and wine economy, which in recent years, despite difficulties and contradictions, adds a timid opening towards the advanced tertiary sector .

Administratively it is divided into two departments: Upper Corsica (2B, Haute-Corse) to the north and Corsica of the South (2A, Corse-du-Sud) to the south. Five districts or arrondissements, 52 cantons and 360 municipalities are included in the region.
