Calabria is an Italian region with ordinary statute of southern Italy with the capital Catanzaro.
It borders to the north with Basilicata and to the south-west an arm of the sea separates it from Sicily and is washed to the east by the Ionian Sea and to the west by the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The name Calabria originally designated Salento (whose inhabitants were called Sallentini and Calabri) inserted in the Augustan region Regio II Apulia et Calabria (today's Puglia) while today's Calabria was called Brutium and together with the current Basilicata constituted the Regio III Lucania et Bruttii.
