Abruzzo Region

The Italian Constitution of 1948 contemplated the establishment of the Abruzzi and Molise region, but the reform of 1963 established the detachment of Molise from Abruzzo (both regions then became effectively operational starting from 1970).

In any case, since 1233, with the establishment of the Giustizierato d'Abruzzo by Frederick II of Swabia, for the first time in history that territory was formally identified that from that moment on will be known as Abruzzo.

It is divided into four provinces: L'Aquila, Chieti, Pescara and Teramo, and in 305 municipalities.

It borders the Marche to the north, the Adriatic Sea to the east, Lazio to the west and Molise to the south.

It is mainly divided into a coastal part on the eastern side with the beaches of the Adriatic, and in a mountainous part on the western side with the Gran Sasso d'Italia (2 914 m a.s.l.), the Majella (2 793 m a.s.l.) and the Sirente -Velino (2 487 m a.s.l.) which constitute the three highest mountain massifs of the entire Apennine chain.
