Molise Region

Molise is an Italian mountainous region with a stretch of coast overlooking the Adriatic Sea. It includes a part of the Abruzzo National Park in the Apennine Mountains, with rich wildlife and trails.

The regional capital, Campobasso, is known for the Monforte Castle, located on a mountain, and for the Romanesque churches. To the north is the archaeological area of ??Pietrabbondante with an ancient theater and a Samnite temple.

It borders Abruzzo to the north, Lazio to the west, Campania to the southwest, Puglia to the southeast and is bordered by the Adriatic Sea to the east.

The current provinces are Campobasso and Isernia, the latter established in 1970 by the detachment of some municipalities from the province of Campobasso.

The current Molise territory largely corresponds to the ancient Regio IV Samnium region, or the Sannio, and was the cradle of the ancient Samnite civilization. In the Lombard period the first nucleus of what would later become the Contado di Molise began to be defined, a territory that only in the modern age would find a stable autonomy from the neighboring Terra di Lavoro and the Capitanata. The contemporary administrative entity has its origins in the subdivision of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies made during the Napoleonic domination.

The term "Molise" comes from the first feudal lords of the Contado, who had the surname "De Molisio", while others claim that it derives from the municipality of Molise.
