Church of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami

The Church of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami, formerly of San Giuseppe in Campo Vaccino, is a Catholic place of worship in Rome, in the Campitelli district, in the Argentario clivus, near the Roman Forum, and above the Mamertine Prison.

It is a rectory and falls within the territory of the parish of San Marco Evangelista al Campidoglio.

The diakonia of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami, established on February 18, 2012, insists on this church.

In 1540 the Congregation of Carpenters had rented the pre-existing church of San Pietro in Carcere above the Mamertine Prison and in 1597 started work on the new church, dedicated to their patron, San Giuseppe, to Giacomo della Porta.

The works were continued in 1602 under the direction of Giovan Battista Montano who designed the facade and on his death (1621) by the pupil Giovan Battista Soria.

The church was completed in 1663 by Antonio Del Grande.

The church was restored in 1886, with the construction of a new apse.

On 30 August 2018 the roof collapsed destroying this beauty.

A portion of the roof of the church collapsed, rendering the building unusable.

The decorated wooden coffered ceiling remains destroyed by the collapse.
