Lombardy is an Italian region with ordinary statute of north-western Italy, prefigured in 1948 and established in 1970.
The territory is divided into 1 516 municipalities (region with the largest number of municipalities on the whole national territory), distributed in 12 large-area entities (of which 11 provinces and 1 metropolitan city, that of Milan).
The region ranks first in Italy by population and by number of local authorities, second by density, after Campania, and fourth by surface, after Sicily, Piedmont and Sardinia. It has its capital in the city of Milan and is bordered to the north with Switzerland (Canton Ticino and Canton Grisons), to the west with Piedmont, to the east with Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige and to the south with Emilia-Romagna.
