Ancient capital of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza (1545-1859), the city of Parma has been a university seat since the 11th century. Parma 2020, Italian Capital of Culture.
It is also the seat since 2002 of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA); from 1956 of the Magistrato per il Po, today the Interregional Agency for the Po River (AIPO); since 1990 of the Po River District Basin Authority (AdbPo); and since 1994 of a Scientific Investigations Department (RIS) of the Carabinieri, with expertise in northern Italy.
Crédit Agricole Cariparma, formerly the Cassa di Risparmio di Parma and Piacenza, is also located there. The Verdi Festival is held every year in October. In December 2015 Parma received the recognition of "UNESCO Creative City for Gastronomy".
The name of Parma is also linked to the homonymous US city that rises in the state of Ohio, a short distance from Cleveland; originally called Greenbrier, the town was renamed in 1826 on the proposal of the doctor David Long, who during his visit to the Emilian dukedom was "impressed by the size and beauty" of the Italian city.
On February 16, 2018 the city was named the Italian capital of culture for the year 2020.
