Grand Palace of Bangkok - Royal Palace

The Grand Palace (Royal Palace) is a breathtaking complex of buildings located in the heart of Bangkok, Thailand. It has been the official residence of the Kings of Siam (and later Thailand) since 1782. Though the king no longer resides there, the palace is still used for official events.

The palace complex is vast, covering over 218,400 square meters (2,351,000 sq ft). It is surrounded by walls and situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya River.

The Grand Palace is not a single structure, but rather a collection of numerous buildings, halls, and pavilions set around open lawns, gardens, and courtyards.

Some of the most notable buildings within the Grand Palace include:

  • The Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) - This is the most sacred temple in Thailand and home to the Emerald Buddha, a highly revered Buddha image carved from jade.
  • The Coronation Hall - This hall was used for the coronation of Thai monarchs until 1925.
  • The Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall - This is the most important building in the Grand Palace complex and is used for royal ceremonies.
  • The Phra Thinang Amarin Wiman Pavilion - This pavilion is a beautiful example of traditional Thai architecture.
