Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is a region of Liguria, Italy, famous for its five picturesque villages: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare. These villages are perched on cliffs overlooking the sea and are connected to each other by hiking trails and a railway.

What to see and what to do in the Cinque Terre:

• Visiting the villages: Each village has its own unique charm. Riomaggiore is the largest and liveliest, while Manarola is known for its colorful houses and its panoramic position. Corniglia is the smallest and quietest village, while Vernazza is famous for its port and its houses perched on the cliff. Monterosso al Mare is the only village with a sandy beach.
• Hiking: The Sentiero Azzurro is the most famous hiking trail in the Cinque Terre. It connects the five villages and offers breathtaking views of the sea. The trail is approximately 12 kilometers long and can be walked in approximately 5-6 hours.
• Taking the train: The train is a great way to travel between the villages of the Cinque Terre. Regional trains stop at all stations and the journey takes about 30 minutes.
• Take a boat tour: There are several companies that offer boat trips to the Cinque Terre. It's a great way to see the coast from a different perspective and visit some hidden coves.
• Taste the local cuisine: Ligurian cuisine is rich in flavours. Typical dishes include pesto, focaccia, farinata and fresh fish.

 

How to get to Cinque Terre:

The Cinque Terre are easily reachable by train from La Spezia or Genoa.   There are also buses that connect the villages. If you are traveling by car, it is important to keep in mind that parking is limited.

• The best time to visit Cinque Terre is from April to October.
• Cinque Terre is a popular destination, so it is advisable to book accommodation in advance, especially during the high season.
• It is important to wear comfortable shoes, as you do a lot of walking.
• Don't forget to bring your camera! Cinque Terre is a truly photogenic place.
