Zorzi Galeoni Palace - UNESCO Headquarters


The Palazzo Zorzi Galeoni or Palazzo Zorzi in Rio San Severo is a Renaissance style palace in the Castello district, number 4930, in the center of Venice, Italy; it was designed after 1480 by Mauro Codussi. It is located a few streets from Santa Maria Formosa, also designed by Codussi. There are a number of Zorzi palaces in Venice, including the Palazzo Zorzi Liassidi and Palazzo Zorzi Bon.

The Zorzi Galeoni currently houses the UNESCO offices in Venice.

The UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, the UNESCO Regional Office for Science and Culture in Europe, based in Venice is the only UNESCO territorial office in Italy and the only UNESCO headquarters with a specific mandate for the region European. It has the task of promoting scientific and cultural cooperation in Europe, with particular attention to south-eastern Europe and the Mediterranean basin, as part of the overall UNESCO program. The Office, developed on the basis of a previous Liaison Office, is located in the historic Palazzo Zorzi, designed by the architect Mauro Codussi around 1480.

The main fields of action of the Office are those of environmental sciences, culture, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue.

The Office's programs and initiatives have the purpose of promoting international cooperation in the geographical area of ??its competence, of encouraging scientific research, supporting training and exchanges between the various States, developing institutional capacities and contributing to the improvement of sector, pursuing better management of natural and cultural resources in order to promote sustainable development.

The Office is particularly active in the following fields: technical assistance for the integrated management of cultural and natural resources, with particular attention to areas designated by UNESCO; water resources and climate change; management of natural and anthropogenic risks; protection of tangible and intangible cultural heritage; fight against the illicit trafficking of cultural goods; promoting the diversity of cultural expressions. The activities of the Office are aimed at achieving the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The office is supported by an antenna in Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina that follows projects in the topics described above.

The Sarajevo Antenna, an integral part of the Regional Office, is involved in the implementation of the Office's activities in South-Eastern Europe, in all fields of competence of the Organization. The Antenna plays an important role and supports the work of the Regional Office to improve regional cooperation and directly contribute to the strengthening of intercultural dialogue, for the respect of diversity, peace and stability and general reconciliation in the region. Through the Antenna, the full involvement of UNESCO in the United Nations country teams and in their reform processes in the countries covered by the mandate of the Regional Office is also guaranteed.

The UNESCO Office in Venice hosts a unit of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission - IOC, UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission - COI. As part of its capacity-building activities, the COI has started a new program dedicated to education and communication of marine sciences for about two years. The IOC coordinates an international initiative called Ocean Literacy for All, which brings together associations of educators and researchers to promote education and awareness on the issues of protecting the sea. Recently a volume dedicated to teachers was published with the aim of providing examples of activities to be carried out in the classroom.

The IOC, founded in 1960, is an organism with functional autonomy of UNESCO that coordinates scientific research for a better knowledge and use of marine resources and is referent in the United Nations system for marine sciences, for observations and for oceanographic services. The IOC's flagship programs include: the maritime spatial planning program, the global database of marine biodiversity, OBIS, tsunami warning systems for the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean and Northeast Atlantic; the global ocean observation system. The IOC also contributes to the European Marine Science Educators Association - EMSEA, to its Mediterranean network (EMSEA-MED).
