Messe Berlin - Berlin Exhibition Grounds - Berlin ExpoCenter CityMesse Berlin (Berlin Exhibition Grounds) is the exhibition complex located in the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district of Berlin, Germany, along Masurenallee, opposite the "Haus des Rundfunks" (House of Broadcasting).
Since 2011, it has officially been known as "Berlin ExpoCenter City" and is managed by the company Messe Berlin GmbH. Overview Built in 1936–37, the twenty-six pavilions cover 160,000 square meters, including the Funkturm Berlin.
The pavilions are connected by a bridge to the Internationales Congress Centrum Berlin, which closed in 2014.
To the south is the CityCube Berlin, opened in 2014, built on the grounds of the former Deutschlandhalle arena, replacing the functions of the ICC. Important trade fairs held here include Internationale Grune Woche Berlin (Green Week), Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (IFA), Internationale Tourismus-Borse (ITB), the youth fair YOU, Venus Berlin, and InnoTrans.
History Before the construction of the Messegelande, there was a parade ground where the Charlottenburg garrison practiced daily.
Since the late 19th century, the route of the Hamburg Stadtbahn ran in the area, moved south when the exhibition center was expanded in the 1920s.
The first exhibition hall, completed in 1914 for automobile exhibitions, was located north of the current exhibition center.
Due to World War I, it was not opened until the German Motor Show in 1921. Another exhibition hall was built in 1924, and the area served as Berlin's trade fair location from 1924.
The name Ausstellungshallen am Kaiserdamm gradually gave way to the current name Ausstellungshallen am Funkturm. In a major fire in 1935, the radio industry building burned, damaging the radio tower.
The other two pavilions north of Masurenallee were destroyed by bombs during World War II.
The basic structure of the current exhibition center, designed by architect Richard Ermisch, was built in 1937 with the distinctive entrance on Hammarskjoldplatz.
