MUST is the Historical Museum of Lecce is located in the heart of the historic centre, adjacent to the church of S. Chiara and the ancient Roman Theatre, the former monastery was founded in 1410 by friar Tommaso Ammirato, religious of the Order of the Conventual Fathers of St. Francis, bishop of the city of Lecce from 1429 to 1438.
Over the centuries the monastery has undergone massive renovations and it seems that the last Poor Clares remained there until 1866. Used in more recent times as an office of the Intendency of Finance, today the building opens to the public with exhibition rooms of rare beauty, in which the white light of the lime blends with the golden atmospheres of the Lecce stone.
At the entrance, a large vaulted arched room amazes the visitor with its grandeur, and envelops him in the light rays coming from the internal courtyards. Inside there are finds and testimonies from various eras of the city's history, from the Messapian and Roman Ages, up to the sixteenth and twentieth centuries. The contemporary art gallery, however, offers a permanent exhibition of the works of the Salento sculptor Cosimo Carlucci.
