The Ducal Palace (Herzogspalais) rises from the remains of the old Villa Wendlandt was a sumptuous villa located in Bolzano (ITALY) in the current Viale Principe Eugenio (Prinz-Eugen-Allee).
The old Villa belonged to Mrs. Wilhelmine Ottilie Wendtlandt from Hamburg, who she had designed by the architect Gottfried von Neureuther from Munich.
The villa had been built in 1872 in the neo-Renaissance style, and was subsequently demolished in 1932 by order of Benito Mussolini and was replaced by the Palazzo Ducale (also known as the Royal Palace or Villa Royal) inaugurated on 28 October 1932.
The Ducal Palace of Bolzano, today the seat of the Government Commissariat, was erected on a project drawn up by the architect Ferdinando Forlati, Superintendent of the Works of Antiquity and Art of the Province of Trieste to be destined to house the residence of the prince of Pistoia, Filiberto Ludovico Massimiliano, representative of the House of Savoy, second son of Prince Tommaso, Duke of Genoa and Princess Isabella Luisa of Bavaria.
The Palace is influenced by Classicism while maintaining, overall, a marked decorative and overall sobriety that make it, from an architectural point of view, one of the most interesting buildings of the "Twentieth Century Style".
Even the style of the interiors and the particular quality of the artifacts make the complex of rare value, finding inside fine furniture, marble coverings with very lively colored designs (Griotte antique red, Belgium black, Torri yellow, purple, Tuscan cipollino and antique green, Val Renara peach blossom, cloud black, royal grey, Carrara calacatta and Levanto red), inlaid wood and large decorations by famous artists.
In particular, to enrich the pictorial ornamentation of the building we find paintings by the Venetian painter Palma il Giovane, Basilio and Tommaso Cascella, Pino Casarini, Francesco Maffei from Vicenza, Giovacchini, Siniscalchi and Antonio Simeoni.
