San Leonardo Abbey in Lama Volara

The Abbey of San Leonardo abbot in Lama Volara of Siponto is a place of spirituality managed by the community of "Reconstructors in prayer".

It is located along the Garganica State Road 89, near the city of Manfredonia, in the Puglia region.

This ancient complex, dating back to the 12th century, is made up of the church, the monastery and the hospital. Since 2014, important restoration and enhancement works have been started on the entire complex in order to make it usable in its entirety.

The abbey church represents a remarkable example of Apulian Romanesque architecture.

Of particular relevance is the north portal, which overlooks the Gargano.

Inside the church you can admire two gnomonic holes, which allow sunlight to enter and create a fascinating play of light and shadow that changes with the different seasons.

The church houses a copy of the wooden Crucifix of San Leonardo (13th century), while the original is kept in the Cathedral of Manfredonia.

The monastery will soon be reopened and will host a museum dedicated to San Leonardo and the theme of pilgrimage.

This space will allow visitors to deepen their knowledge of the saint and to explore the meaning and importance of pilgrimage in spirituality.

The hospital was originally the place where pilgrims heading to the Grotto of the Archangel Michael in Monte Sant'Angelo were welcomed and hosted.

The hospital has been completely restored and is now operational again, probably with a new function.

Mons. Michele Castoro, Archbishop of Manfredonia - Vieste - San Giovanni Rotondo, entrusted the Reconstructors with the mission of reviving the Abbey, so that it can once again become an open and welcoming center for those seeking a way to the Divine.

Through a spirituality based on silence, contemplation and deep meditation, it is possible to learn to practice a prayer of the heart which allows us to face the challenges of the modern world with greater awareness and trust in the action of Divine Providence.
