Swabian Castle of Augusta

The Swabian Castle of Augusta is located in the city of Augusta, in the province of Syracuse, Sicily.

Built in the 13th century, the castle is an imposing building with a quadrangular plan, surrounded by four corner towers and a crenellated wall. Inside the castle there are numerous rooms, some of which have been used as prisons.

The keep, the main tower, is about 30 meters high and houses a series of multi-level rooms, with a spiral stone staircase leading up to the top, from which you can enjoy a panoramic view over the city and the bay.

The castle has played an important role in the history of Sicily, having been at the center of numerous conflicts between various powers that vied for control of the island.

Over the centuries, the castle has undergone major restorations and modifications, such as the addition of an outer wall in the 15th century, the enlargement of the towers and the addition of a drawbridge.

Normally the Swabian Castle of Augusta is open to the public and hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events, as well as being a highly appreciated tourist destination for its historical and architectural beauty.

Today under restoration and the future Museum of the Mediterranean will be built.
