Sea Museum - Bourbon Arsenal of the Royal Navy in Palermo, located in the La Cala district, near the port.
The building was built at the end of the 18th century by order of King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon to house the shipyards of the Royal Navy.
The Arsenale della Marina of Palermo is a monumental building of large dimensions, which extends over an area of about 7 hectares.
The complex includes several facilities, including shipyards, horse stables and the remaining ship maintenance facilities. The main building of the complex consists of a long two-story building, with a neoclassical facade with columns and arches.
During the Bourbon period, the Arsenale della Marina was an important naval production center, where the warships of the Bourbon fleet were built and repaired. After the unification of Italy, the building continued to be used by the Italian Navy, housing the ship maintenance workshops and the storage of naval materials.
Today, the Arsenale della Marina di Palermo has been restored and houses several cultural institutions and museums.
The complex is open to the public and periodically organizes events, exhibitions and cultural performances.
Furthermore, the main building of the complex houses the Museum of Innovation, dedicated to the history of science and technology in Sicily, and the Palermo Regional Pole of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.
